July 1962 (?)
Mostly known for the presence of Rod Stewart in their lineup, Jimmy Powell and The Five Dimensions are undoubtedly one of the most underrated British rhythm and blues bands of the mid-60's. They emerged from a London-based semi-pro band called The Dimensions and led by the most lyrical bass player in British rock and one of the all-time greats, Louis Cennamo (b. Louis David Cennamo, Tuesday, March 5, 1946, Hornsey, London Borough of Haringey, Greater London, of Italian descent). In June 1962 the sixteen-year-old Louis quit school (Stationers' Company's School in Hornsey) to begin his musical career, and a month or so later he starts to put together a band with a neighbour friend called Gary Leport, aka 'Sludge' (b. 1945, Hornsey, North London), who had previously played lead guitar with The Moontrekkers, an instrumental rock and roll combo who had a hit with 'Night Of The Vampires' a year earlier. They soon recruited Brian Kattenhorn, aka 'Chick' (b. Brian David Kattenhorn, 1945, Tottenham, North London), formerly of the Sea Cadets Corps and then The Young Ones. The lineup was finally completed with Louis' friend and ex-schoolmate (he left Stationers' Company's School in November of that year too) Pete Mariosa (b. Giuseppe Peter Mariosa, Monday, November 10, 1947, Castel Ruggero, Italy, from an Italian father and an English mother (with Italian parents) - d. February 2021, Barnstaple, North Devon, for cancer with infection in liver and kidneys) on rhythm guitar. According to Gary, it was him who came up with the name 'The Dimensions' after he saw a record player advertised as a "New Dimensions in Sound" for sale, so he thought it was a good name for the band. Louis confirmed Gary's version, although according to Peter, it was actually him who came up with the name and it came from an old album he bought second hand titled 'Chet Atkins in 3 Dimensions'. Anyway, The Dimensions' first manager was a bus driver who thought he was a bit of an impresario. They were a bit naive too, and so they let him do his stuff.

Saturday (?), unknown date, 1962/63: 'Girl Guides Fundraising Event' (?), Saint Luke's Church Hall, 38 Mayfield Road, Hornsey, London Borough of Haringey, Greater London
"The building at that time was a Church of England establishment," eyewitness Diana Hancock recalls. "The hall had a state and a reasonable amount of space. I think it was either my girlfriend's private birthday party or a girl guides fundraising event. If it was my girlfriend's party, which I know was held in that church hall, then it would have been August. If it was a girl guide fundraising event it could have been any Saturday night throughout the year. I'm presuming it was 1962 purely because of the time-line in your blog. It would have made more sense to me had it been August 1963 because my girlfriend would have been celebrating her 13th Birthday i.e. becoming a teenager." "I must have been impressed with their music and thought they had prospects," Diana adds, "otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to ask them to sign the sheet of lined paper." "That was probably our first gig or close to it," Louis Cennamo recalls. "It was a church hall just below the playgrounds of the school I had just left, Pete's also. I remember playing there little with Tommy, and Rod Stewart used to sing there I believe with another band." "I remember that gig as it was my last one," Pete Mariosa recalls. "That was the night I threw my Strat across the stage after the first half. I didn’t like the stupid stage routine. Also pretty sure that wasn’t a birthday party. Too many people for a private party. We only did that gig once."

May 1963 (?): USAFE (United States Air Force in Europe) Lakenheath Base, Lakenheath, Suffolk
Although Pete Mariosa recalls that his last gig with the band was (maybe) the one at the above Saint Luke's Church Hall, Louis Cennamo recalls that actually this one could be the very last. "I seem to remember playing at Lakenheath US Air Base and Pete played guitar with only 4 strings, saying he couldn't afford to buy a set (lol)," Louis confirms. "I thought that might have been his last gig, as he wouldn't have played with only 4 strings again... but not sure about that." "He could be right," Pete adds, "It was over 55 years ago!"
Late May 1963
Pete Mariosa became disillusioned by having to play The Beatles' covers, silly instrumentals like 'The Carousel Waltz' and 'The Sailor’s Hornpipe', and jumping up on chairs as some sort of stage act. So after the above mentioned gig where he threw his guitar across the stage after the first half, he quits The Dimensions although he and the band stayed good friends (Pete will play with the not yet famous Phil Collins in The Charge a couple of years later). At that point Gary Leport recruited a new rhythm guitar player called Michael 'Mike' Webb (b. Monday, December 18, 1944, Luton, Bedfordshire), after being introduced to him by a mutual friend called Howard 'Howie' Conder (former drummer of The Barron Knights, and The Moontrekkers with Gary).

Saturday, June 8 or 15 or 22, 1963: Wing Village Hall, 71 Leighton Road, Wing, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire
Mike Webb's first gig with The Dimensions. Mike himself had organized this gig and also booked his old band Kenny and The Senators from near Linslade to play as opening act. Mike played with both bands that night and it was a way of saying goodbye to his home town because right after that he went to live with his new bandmate Gary Leport in London for a time.

July 1963 (?)
Gary Leport wanted to play jazz and blues music rather than the sort of Beatles' style music they were playing with Tommy Bishop, so he recruited another and more suitable singer for the band, his friend and ex-schoolmate Rod Stewart (b. Roderick David Stewart, January 10, 1945, 507 Archway Road, Highgate, North London). Gary and Rod had also already played in a band together a couple of years earlier, The Raiders. The new lineup started rehearsals together in a room at a pub in Hornsey. Rod was very much into blues and played harmonica, so they started to learn songs from American legends such as Muddy Waters, and Sonny Terry, and also from Rod's idol Cyril Davies, the greatest British harmonica player of all-time.

August/September 1963 (?): unknown hall, Camden Town, London Borough of Camden, Greater London
The gigs dried up and The Dimensions joined the renowned 'Malcolm Nixon Agency' and through them they met a seventeen-year-old Jamaican ska singer called Millie Small, which had arrived in London in July. The agency wanted a backing band for Millie for both stage and records, and The Dimensions were asked to audition for her. The audition was held at a rehearsal hall in Camden Town. Mike Webb recalls that Millie was a very shy little girl and he think her father or mother was with her that day. Mike also recalls that maybe they played Millie's classic hit 'My Boy Lollipop' at the audition. Anyway, in the end, though, the band did not get the gig because they hated ska music, so they did not put much effort in and so Millie found another band.

Through the 'Malcolm Nixon Agency', The Dimensions teamed up with a popular rhythm and blues singer called James 'Jimmy' Powell (b. Tuesday, October 13, 1942, Selly Oak, Birmingham, Warwickshire - d. Friday, May 13, 2016 at his home in Blisworth, West Northamptonshire), who had a lot of work but no band. Jimmy begin his musical career in Birmingham in the mid-50's with The Beacon Wheelmen's Skiffle Group and then with The Jumping Jacks. After leaving school, Powell apprenticed as a lathe operator in Kings Norton, Birmingham, while at night he fronted local group The Detours, which he formed in 1958/59, and then in 1961 he turned "pro" when he joined up-and-coming local band The Rockin' Berries, a future famous rock and roll group. In early 1962 Jimmy left the Berries and signed as solo artist with Decca Records. After the release of three UK singles - 'Sugar Babe - Part 1 / Sugar Babe - Part 2' (Decca F 11447) in March 1962 (released also in Germany in April 1962 and July 1968, and again in the UK in June 1968), 'Tom Hark / Dance Her By Me' (Decca F 11544) in November 1962, and 'Remember Then / Everyone But You' (Decca F 11570) in January 1963 (released also in Germany in March 1963 with 'Tom Hark' as B-side), one US single - 'Dance Her By Me / When Will You Say I Love You' (London 45-LON 9545) in 1962, and also after an appearance as solo performer on the movie Just For Fun that year, Jimmy went down to London looking to find a band to back him up and finally decided on The Dimensions. At that point the band changed it's name to 'The Five Dimensions' not because the numbers changed, but because it sounded better.

Thursday, September 19 - Wednesday, October 2, 1963: Scotland tour.....
Jimmy Powell and The Five Dimensions toured for two weeks all over Scotland in an old 'Dormobile' (the six band members, plus their driver/manager Dave McCarthy, an old friend of Rod Stewart and Gary Leport). They played at a club called 'Luna Park' in Edinburgh (where they were short of money for a hotel so Mike Webb slept on one of the slabs in a morgue!), then supported The Hollies in Auchinleck, then went right to the far north in Thurso, near John o' Groats, then Eyemouth in the south, and finally Banchory in the north.

Jimmy Powell and The Five Dimensions broke up after a split at the 'Malcolm Nixon Agency'. The "original" Five Dimensions moved to the 'Robert Stigwood Organisation' and continue to play on their own in London after replacing Dave Clapham with a new piano player called Robert 'Bob' Scriven (b. 1941, Birmingham, Warwickshire), while Jimmy Powell stayed with the 'Malcolm Nixon Agency' and went back home to Birmingham looking to find new musicians to be The "fictitious" Five Dimensions.

As mentioned above, after the split between him and The "original" Five Dimensions, Jimmy Powell went back home to Birmingham, and he soon put together The "fictitious" Five Dimensions with his old bandmates and former members of the original band, Martin Shaw and Kenny White, and new members such as bassist Tim Munns formerly of The Rockin' Berries, and drummer B.J. Wilson (b. Barrie James Wilson, Tuesday, March 18, 1947, Haslebury Road, Edmonton, North London), formerly of The Paramounts. It was Kenny White who persuaded B.J. Wilson to leave The Paramounts to play with Jimmy Powell and The Five Dimensions, because they were old friends and former schoolmates (they also had played together in an amateur school band about five or six years earlier when they attended 'Latymer Grammar School' in Edmonton).

WIlson left Jimmy Powell and The Five Dimensions and return to his old band The Paramounts (later well known under the name of Procol Harum) because he felt that he had made a bad move and was really missing The Paramounts and he wanted so much to come back with them exactly. Anyway, he was replaced by a new drummer called Peter Knight.

January 1966
Jimmy Powell and The Five Dimensions broke up. Kenny White went to form The Score, Martin Shaw went to play with The Paramounts, while Jimmy Powell began looking for another band to be The "new" "fictitious" Five Dimensions and remembered The Puzzle from the year before at the Marquee Club. Dave Cunningham, The Puzzle's manager, got a call from Jimmy and the latter invited the band to joined him and turned pro. After a practice session, The Puzzle upped sticks and moved from their home town of Royton to Birmingham and lived, literally, in the demo recording studio that Jimmy ran for 'Strike Records'. It was well south of the centre of Brum on the A38 very close to the British Leyland car plant in Longbridge. The Puzzle, a four-piece which included lead guitarist Steve Bolton, aka 'Boltz' (b. Tuesday, November 8, 1949, Manchester), desperately tried to get an Hammond organist to be a quintet, but it just didn't happen, so the new band was always billed as 'Jimmy Powell and The Dimensions' as opposed to 'The Five Dimensions'.

Supposedly this was Jimmy Powell and The Dimensions' last gig before broke up after The Puzzle/Dimensions abruptly left Jimmy Powell after a non-materialising record deal, a cancelled European tour, and finding out they were being conned over gig monies (back home The Puzzle broke up (Alan Stone joined the Royal Navy, Steve Bolton went on to join the acclaimed rock band Atomic Rooster, and Mick Green sadly passed away in 2001)). So, Jimmy was looking again for other musicians to be The Dimensions and at the dawn of the new year he assumed a Coventry-based band called Willie's Cult, which featured Dave Fullford, Willie Morris, Tom Russell, Alan Shepherd, Stan Byers (d. 2010), and Rod Godwin (b. Jimmy Powell and the Dimensions #2's debut gig. "One afternoon I was in Willie’s house when the phone rang – it was Jimmy Powell from West Heath," recalls Alan Shepherd. So we motored off and met him in the dressing room – compared which songs we did ('Midnight Hour', 'I Got a Woman', usual R&B stuff), went on & backed him with no rehearsal. He was professional to pull it off! Anyway Jimmy was looking for a backing group so we agreed to join him."

About 50 people walked out of the dance when two hours after the start it was anounced that the show was cancelled because the group had been unable to find its wat to the centre. The dance was organized by Wilnecote Youth Centre to raise money for club funds. The 120 people who had paid for admission were offered half of their money back because of the let-down. Mr. Ken Briggs, the club leader, told a Tamworth Herald reporter: "When the group failed to turn up I phoned Tamworth police station and was told the players had been given directions". Mr. Terry Blood, agent for the group, said "Jimmy Powell would like the…He…an engagement before and is more hurt than anyone about this slip. Jimmy did rather a silly thing. He had forgotten to bring his contract for the dance with him. He knew the dance had something to do with the youth in Tamworth, but he could not remember exactly where it was being held". Said Mr. Blood: "The group went to the police station but could not get any form idea of where they were supposed to be playing. Jimmy and another boy then went to about seven different places and asked people in the street".

Lots of teenagers were drafted in to be the dancers and we mimed to our latest single. They even played it over the closing credits but it wasn’t a hit!"
